Vimshottari dasha (see our full guide to how it works) divides a life into nine mahadashas that always run in the same fixed order: Ketu → Shukra (Venus) → Surya (Sun) → Chandra (Moon) → Mangal (Mars) → Rahu → Guru (Jupiter) → Shani (Saturn) → Budh (Mercury). Chandra's slot is 10 years, fourth in the cycle.

Chandra mahadasha kitne saal ka hota hai? Always 10 years, for every chart — the length of each mahadasha is fixed classically and never varies by birth chart. It sits below the middle of the nine: three periods run shorter than Chandra's (Surya's 6 years, and the joint 7-year periods of Ketu and Mangal), and five run longer (Guru 16, Budh 17, Rahu 18, Shani 19, Shukra 20). Which mahadasha you are born into, and how much of Chandra's 10 years you actually live through, is set once — from the nakshatra your Moon occupied, and how far through it the Moon had travelled, at your exact birth moment.

What Chandra actually signifies

Chandra (the Moon), classically read as the fastest-moving and most changeable of the grahas, governs the inner and everyday register of life rather than status or force. Its core significations:

• The mind (manas) — thought, mood, perception, and how a person processes their inner life day to day.
• The mother — Chandra is the classical naisargika (natural) karaka for the mother, the fixed significator of the fourth bhava's parental leg.
• Emotional life — the felt, moment-to-moment register, distinct from Surya's steadier sense of self.
• General wellbeing and domestic comfort — home life, everyday contentment, the fourth bhava's territory more broadly.
• Public standing — a well-placed Chandra tends to read as approachable and well-liked, since Chandra is how a person is popularly perceived.
• Changeability — the Moon visibly waxes and wanes, and is classically read as stronger and more benefic waxing (shukla paksha) than waning (krishna paksha) — a strength called paksha-bala. Its dasha is traditionally read as one where mood or circumstance can show more visible movement than under a steadier graha's period.

Chandra is one of the classical nine grahas, and — together with Surya — one of the two royal ones: Surya carries the ātmā (self), Chandra the manas (mind). Its motion is the swiftest of the nine, roughly 13°20′ a day, which is also why it is the fastest dasha-relevant body to track. A Chandra period, then, tends to bring the mind, the mother and one's everyday emotional footing into sharper focus — the actual flavour depends heavily on the rest of the chart.

Antardasha — the sub-periods inside a Chandra Mahadasha

A 10-year mahadasha is not one uninterrupted stretch. It divides into nine antardashas (sub-periods), one for each of the nine dasha planets — beginning with Chandra's own, then continuing in the same fixed order — each proportionally sized within the 10 years. Each antardasha further divides into nine pratyantardashas (the next layer down). A running antardasha shifts the shorter-term flavour of the wider Chandra period toward whichever planet's sub-period is active — a Chandra–Guru antardasha reads differently from a Chandra–Shani one — but it works alongside what the Mahadasha itself already governs, not in place of it. This is timing detail, not a separate promise: the antardasha decides when within the period a theme sharpens, while the birth chart still decides what it means.

Dignity — why "mind and mother" is not the same as "an emotional decade"

This is the part most Chandra-mahadasha write-ups skip. Chandra's association with mind and mood describes Chandra's own nature as a graha — it is not a statement about how your 10 years will go. Chandra is subject to dignity exactly like every other planet:

• Exalted in Vrishabha (Taurus) — Chandra's strongest classical placement.
• Debilitated in Vrishchika (Scorpio) — its weakest classical placement.
• Own sign in Karka (Cancer) — the only sign Chandra rules.

A well-placed, dignified Chandra tends to deliver its themes — a settled mind, domestic ease, warm public standing, closeness with the mother — with more steadiness. A weaker or afflicted Chandra in the same period asks for more care in exactly those same areas — more deliberate attention to routine, rest and emotional footing — rather than announcing distress. Dignity shapes how a period plays out; it does not decide whether it happens. Every mahadasha runs on schedule regardless of the planet's strength — the difference is in the texture of the period, not whether it arrives. None of this is a mental-health diagnosis or a substitute for professional care — a chart reading and a clinical assessment are different things.

What a Chandra Mahadasha does — and does not — mean

Hold onto the same distinction every dasha carries: the period is when, the birth chart is what. Chandra's turn does not import outcomes from nowhere — it brings its own themes (mind, mother, emotional life, public standing, domestic comfort) into sharper focus for as long as it runs, and what actually happens in those areas is read from what the natal chart already holds for Chandra: its house, its dignity, and the planets connected to it.

This is a tendency window, not a scripted outcome. The same Chandra Mahadasha does not play out the same way for two different people — one chart's Chandra themes centre on the mother and home, another's on public life and popularity, another's on inner steadiness or its opposite, depending entirely on the rest of that person's birth chart.
