Manglik dosha — also called Mangal Dosha, Kuja Dosha or Bhauma Dosha — is when Mangal (Mars) sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your kundli, counted from the lagna (ascendant) and the natal Moon — and, in the fuller tradition, from Shukra (Venus) too. Classically it's a caution about marital harmony, because Mangal is hot, forceful, impatient energy — and here it lands on the houses of marriage, home and intimacy.
But it is not a marriage sentence. The classical texts spend as much effort on what cancels the dosha as on the dosha itself — and a real chart check very often finds one of those cancellations already in place. Most Mangliks marry, and stay married, perfectly happily.
What Manglik dosha actually is
Mangal (Mars) is the graha of drive, courage, heat and assertion — not an evil planet, just an intense one. The Manglik reading is about where that intensity falls. When Mangal occupies one of these houses, it's considered to press on marriage and domestic life:

Two things matter that a one-line "you're Manglik" verdict skips. First, the dosha is checked from more than one point: the mainstream check is from the lagna and the natal Moon, and many traditions — especially South-Indian practice — add a third reference, Shukra (Venus), because Venus is the natural significator (kāraka) of marriage. Being Manglik from all of them is a very different thing from being Manglik from only one; Ravitra follows this fuller three-reference method. It is not part of the 36-guna score
This surprises people: the famous 36-guna score from Gun Milan (Ashtakoot) does not include Manglik dosha at all. Those 36 points measure eight kootas of compatibility — mind, temperament, health and so on — and Manglik is assessed separately, on its own. So a couple can score a strong 28/36 and still have the Manglik question to answer, or score modestly and have no Manglik concern at all. What actually cancels or softens it
This is the part the fear never gets to. Classical jyotish lists a long set of conditions (मंगल दोष परिहार, Mangal-dosha-parihara) under which the dosha is cancelled or greatly reduced. The common, well-accepted ones:
- Both partners are Manglik. The oldest and most widely used cancellation — if both charts carry Mangal dosha, it's treated as neutralised for that match. Two Mangliks are considered a compatible pairing on this factor.
- Mangal is dignified. Mangal in its own signs (मेष Mesh / वृश्चिक Vrishchik), exalted in मकर Makar, or in a friendly sign behaves very differently from a weak Mangal — a strong, well-placed Mars in a dosha house is far milder.
- A benefic tempers it. A drishti (aspect) or conjunction from Guru (Jupiter) on Mangal or the 7th house — or a strong benefic like Guru or Shukra (Venus) sitting in a kendra (an angle: the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) — steadies the heat considerably.
- Certain sign-in-house placements are exempt. The classical texts carry specific tables where Mangal in a particular rashi in a particular dosha house does not count — because in that sign Mars is in its own or a friendly rashi. This is exactly why the sign matters, not just the house number.
- You're Manglik from only one reference. Manglik from the lagna but not from the Moon or from Venus is a much lighter reading than Manglik from all three.
None of these needs a remedy to "activate" — they are simply present or not in the chart. Which is why two people can both be labelled "Manglik" and be in completely different situations: the only useful answer reads your actual Mangal, not the scary headline.
Manglik dosha is the most weaponised idea in Indian matchmaking — used to call off engagements, to shame people, and to sell "fixes". If someone is using your kundli to frighten you, or to sell you a gemstone, a costly puja or a kumbh vivah in a panic, that's a sales tactic, not jyotish. An honest reading tells you whether the dosha is even present, whether it's already cancelled, and stops there. It never claims your marriage will fail or that a spouse is in danger — the chart does not say that, and no honest jyotishi will.
Why the fear is overblown
Start with a number that puts it in perspective: by the raw house rule, Mangal lands in a "Manglik" house in six of the twelve houses — so from the lagna alone, close to half of all charts are "Manglik". Something that common cannot be a doom.
Manglik dosha describes a tendency — that Mangal's heat, landing on the marriage houses, wants a compatible outlet — not a fixed outcome. It is a compatibility caution, in the same spirit as matching temperaments before a marriage. Read honestly, it usually resolves into one of three plain findings: you're not really Manglik; you are, but a cancellation already applies; or you are, and it's worth matching thoughtfully — which is ordinary, careful matchmaking, not doom.
What it is not is a verdict that a marriage will break or that a spouse is at risk. That framing is fear-selling, and it has caused real harm — called-off engagements, blame, and money spent on "remedies" for a dosha that was mild or already cancelled. A real chart check is the antidote to that fear, not fuel for it.
